Show Me the Way

One my way home from work today, my iPod started playing Show Me the Way by Styx.  My mind closely links this song to Desert Storm, something I was extremely fascinated with as the eight year old kid I was in 1990. Not exactly sure why either and if you don't believe me, just ask me about my Desert Storm trading card collection.  I own them all.  Anyways, back on topic.  I remember lots of little things from that time in relation to Desert Storm...

I can remember begging my mom for trading cards.  I remember meeting a friend of my mothers who had a son serving on the USS Saratoga which at the time was in the Gulf.  I remember a TV special geared towards kids, maybe it was on CNN or something, but it had a number you could call to ask questions, my parents gave me permission and I call only to find out it was a wrong number posted on the show and I couldn't ask my question. I remember news stories about kids in Israel have to carry gas masks to school.  I remember the local radio station in Saratoga (Fly 92 I think) playing a modified version of Show Me the Way splicing in random war related audio between lyrics.  At one point in the song, they had a little girl saying all she wanted was her daddy to come home.

I tried finding bootleg copies of that song.  I've found a couple, none with the little girl, but ones I've saved none the less.  Even found some redone for Iraqi Freedom.

I can trace several extreme fascinations I have to Desert Storm.  The USS Saratoga, Battleships and obviously Desert Storm itself.

I had a train of thought with this post, but I've now lost it.  Guess i'll just post this.  I'll add more later if I remember where I was going.

To bad that I'll have to "love" a new squadron soon.  I was a Wallbanger, I don't count the Greyhawks, and I'm soon to be a Bluetail.

...this was fun!  For you, for me, and for the voices in our heads.
